Biologic Therapy — Anaheim & Los Angeles
Using your own blood's growth factors to accelerate healing after implant placement, extractions, and bone grafting. No synthetic additives. Available at both our Anaheim and Los Angeles offices.
The Science
PRF and CGF therapy harnesses growth factors already present in your blood. No foreign material, no synthetic additives — just your body's own biology, concentrated and applied where it's needed most.
PRF — Platelet-Rich Fibrin
A small amount of blood is drawn at the start of your appointment and placed in a centrifuge. In 8–12 minutes, the spin separates the blood into layers. The middle layer — a fibrin membrane — is rich in platelets and a broad spectrum of growth factors. This membrane can be placed directly into the surgical site or shaped into a gel.
CGF — Concentrated Growth Factors
CGF uses a variable-speed centrifuge protocol — alternating faster and slower spin cycles — to produce a denser, more concentrated fibrin clot. The variable-speed spin yields a higher concentration of key growth factors compared to standard PRF. This makes CGF particularly suited to more complex surgical cases where maximum regenerative signaling is valuable.
The Process
PRF and CGF preparation happens at the start of your appointment, before your implant or surgical procedure begins. There is no separate visit and no added appointment time.
At the start of your appointment, a small tube of blood is drawn — the same as a routine lab draw. Most patients find it barely noticeable. Only the amount needed is taken.
The blood tube is placed in our in-office centrifuge. PRF uses a standard spin of 8–12 minutes. CGF uses a variable-speed protocol with alternating spin rates to produce a denser, more concentrated result. Both run while Dr. Kim prepares the surgical site.
Once the spin is complete, the fibrin layer is separated and can be pressed into a membrane or used as a gel. The form is chosen based on where and how it will be placed in the surgical site.
The membrane or gel is placed directly into the implant socket, extraction site, or bone graft area. It integrates with the surrounding tissue and begins releasing growth factors immediately.
Growth factors are released over several days, recruiting the body's repair cells to the site continuously. The result is faster soft tissue closure, better bone regeneration alongside any grafting material, and typically less post-operative discomfort.
Clinical Benefits
The evidence behind growth factor therapy is well-established in oral and maxillofacial surgery. These are the outcomes we see consistently in implant, grafting, and extraction cases.
Growth factors accelerate gingival closure over the surgical site, reducing the window for bacterial exposure.
The fibrin matrix acts as a biologic scaffold that reduces the inflammatory cascade typically associated with surgical trauma.
Earlier tissue closure and enhanced local immune signaling reduce the risk of post-operative infection at the surgical site.
When placed alongside bone graft material, PRF/CGF membranes enhance vascularization and osteoblast activity, improving graft integration.
Faster initial healing means earlier implant osseointegration confirmation and a shorter path to the final restoration.
No synthetic growth factor injections, no animal-derived materials. Everything used is produced from your own blood at the time of surgery.
Applications
Dr. Kim routinely incorporates PRF and CGF into surgical cases where accelerated healing and improved regeneration directly benefit the outcome.
Protocol Comparison
Both are autologous biologic protocols derived from your own blood. The difference is in centrifuge speed, resulting concentration, and the types of cases where each is most effective.
Standard-speed centrifuge spin, 8–12 minutes. Produces a flexible fibrin membrane or gel with a solid concentration of platelets and growth factors. Excellent for the majority of implant, extraction, and grafting cases. Well-studied with a long track record in oral surgery worldwide.
Variable-speed centrifuge protocol with alternating spin rates. Produces a denser fibrin clot with a higher concentration of growth factors. The increased concentration makes it particularly suited to more complex surgical cases — large bone grafts, sinus lifts, or patients who may benefit from enhanced regenerative signaling due to systemic factors like diabetes or a history of smoking.
Questions
A minor pinch — the same sensation as any routine blood draw. The tube is small and the process takes under a minute. Most patients report it's the part of the appointment they notice least.
In many cases, PRF and CGF preparation is included as part of the implant or surgical fee rather than billed separately. The exact breakdown depends on the procedure and will be reviewed at your consultation. We also offer Cherry financing at both locations for cases that require it.
Yes. PRF and CGF protocols are FDA-cleared and have been used extensively in oral surgery, orthopedics, and wound care worldwide for over two decades. Because the material comes entirely from the patient's own blood, there is no risk of allergic reaction or rejection from foreign material.
Anyone having implants, extractions, or bone grafting can benefit from PRF/CGF. It is especially valuable for patients with diabetes, patients who smoke, those on medications that affect healing (such as bisphosphonates), or anyone with a prior history of slow healing or graft complications. Mention any of these at your consultation.
Yes — PRF and CGF therapy is available at both our Anaheim location (1150 N Harbor Blvd) and our Los Angeles Koreatown location (3600 Wilshire Blvd). Dr. Kim performs all surgical cases personally at both offices.
Dr. Kim will review your case and let you know whether PRF, CGF, or a combination is appropriate for your procedure. Both offices offer this protocol at no separate visit required.
